Introduction

In this project we would be discussing about the importance of Memory, how it plays an important role inthe performance of a computer and what kind of developments are happening in this field (what is the future of the RAM technology), current tecnology being used and the advantages and disadvantages of different

kinds of RAM,we would also be looking at the history of RAM why did RAM come into picture, what was the need to develop this kind of memory(History section will contain a detailed study of the same).

Memory is a great concept and very important in computer architecture. Memory is involved in anything involving storage, processing and output. In day to day activities memory plays a vital role for humans, different gadgets and other living beings.  Memory in PC’s plays important role for a computer to work; the CPU must take program instructions and exchange data directly with memory. As in consequence memory must keep pace as the CPU (or make the CPU wait for it to catch up).

Now that processors are so incredibly fast and getting faster every few months, traditional memory architectures are being replaced by specialized memory devices that have been tailored to serve specific functions in the Pc.

Early types of computer storage varied from vacuum tubes to magnet-cores with coils of wires wrapped around them these were replaced by transistors and in 1970 integrated circuits (IC’s) were developed. In the same year RAM was manufactured in the form of a chip (IC) - Modern day RAM comes in the form of long PC board wafers.
RAM: is a memory chip that can be read, written and re-written to and from in any random order, while the computer in which it resides is powered on.

Technical Defintion of RAM

The term “RAM” refers to a computer main memory or the primary memory. It is measured in megabytes or gigabytes. All memory is rated in terms of speed especially access time with respect to RAM, data can be accessed randomly.

RAM is broadly classified into two categories though Flash Memory has been regarded as a RAM, we will be focusing on SRAM-Static RAM and DRAM- Dynamic RAM (Will be discussed in detail in the Review Section)
We will be also looking at the different kind of RAM packaging schemes-IMM’s(Inline Memory Modules). The two types of schemes that we would be looking at would be SIMM(Single Inline Memory Module)and DIMM(Double Inline Memory Module),(Will be discussed in detail in the Review Section)
